The Ancient Greeks

The ancient Greeks were some of the first poets to explore the themes of love and loss. Sappho, one of the most famous Greek poets, wrote many poems about her love for women. Her poems are often passionate and intense, and they capture the full range of emotions that come with love, from joy to despair.

Come, Aphrodite, come, gold-wreathed one, Who sittest throned in Cyprus white, The sea-girt isle where soft winds run, And incense burns both day and night.

Anacreon, another Greek poet, wrote many poems about love and wine. His poems are often light and playful, and they celebrate the joys of life. However, even Anacreon's poems about love often contain a touch of sadness, as he knew that all good things must come to an end.

Fill high the bowl with Samian wine! Our hearts are light, our thoughts are gay; And life is sweet, and love is thine, And friendship smiles upon our way.

The Romantics

The Romantic poets of the 19th century were also fascinated by the themes of love and loss. William Wordsworth, one of the most famous Romantic poets, wrote many poems about his love for nature. However, he also wrote some of the most moving poems about loss, such as his poem "Ode: Intimations of Immortality."

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream, The earth, and every common sight, To me did seem Apparelled in celestial light, The glory and the freshness of a dream.

John Keats, another Romantic poet, wrote many poems about love and beauty. However, he also wrote some of the most tragic poems about loss, such as his poem "Ode to a Nightingale."

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: 'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot, But being too happy in thine happiness,— That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees, In some melodious plot Of beechen green, and shadows numberless, Singest of summer in full-throated ease.

The Modernists

The Modernist poets of the 20th century continued to explore the themes of love and loss. However, they often did so in a more fragmented and experimental way. T.S. Eliot, one of the most famous Modernist poets, wrote many poems about love and loss, such as his poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock."

Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table;

Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:

Streets that follow like a tedious argument Of insidious intent To lead you to an overwhelming question...

Ezra Pound, another Modernist poet, wrote many poems about love and loss, such as his poem "Hugh Selwyn Mauberley."

For three years, out of key with his time, He strove to resuscitate the dead art Of poetry; to maintain 'the sublime' In the old sense. Wrong from the start—

No, wrong from the start; should have been born In some Ancien Regime, As, say, Becque de Becque ...

These poems remind us that love and loss are two sides of the same coin. They are both essential parts of the human experience. We cannot fully appreciate one without the other.
