She was the daughter of sharecroppers, and she grew up in poverty. From a young age, Zaneta dreamed of flying. She would sit for hours watching airplanes fly overhead, and she would pretend that she was the pilot.

When Zaneta was 16 years old, she took her first flying lesson. She was a natural pilot, and she quickly soloed. However, her dream of becoming a professional pilot was almost derailed by racism. At the time, there were no Black women pilots in the United States. Zaneta was told that she would never be able to fly for a commercial airline.

Zaneta refused to give up on her dream. She continued to fly, and she eventually became one of the most accomplished pilots in the country. In 1955, she became the first Black woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Her flight was a major milestone in the history of aviation, and it inspired countless other Black women to pursue their dreams.

Zaneta Dudley's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of following your dreams. She faced incredible odds, but she never gave up. Her story is an inspiration to us all.

Praise for Carry On, Black Girl

“Carry On, Black Girl is a powerful and inspiring story about a woman who overcame incredible odds to achieve her dreams.
